Piston seals, or piston rings, are used in hydraulic cylinders for fluid sealing and are designed to ensure that pressurized fluid does not leak through the cylinder head as system pressure pushes the piston down into the cylinder bore. The choice of piston seal depends on how the cylinder works. For single-acting-only cylinders, capable of sealing off dynamic pressure from one side (one-way), it is always best to choose a seal type designed to provide the best sealing quality for the single-acting function. Optimum sealing capability for double-acting cylinders, capable of sealing dynamic pressure from both sides (both directions), by selecting double-acting seals. Piston designs that use two single-acting seals on a piston intended for a double-acting cylinder are prone to failure. The reason is that very high pressures can be trapped between the seals. Piston seals, whether single-acting or double-acting, can be designed and used with integrated or separate back-up and guide rings.
